Learning How to SEO

By Robert D. Kelsey
Getting into the swing of learning how to optimize your own website is a simple matter of making a decision on how you are going to learn. There are options. You can opt to do this yourself and begin studying all of the available sources of optimization information online, and there are literally hundreds of them.

You can simply dive in and begin making changes to your site, and learn from your mistakes (amazingly, this is perhaps the most often path taken), or you can take a course, either online or offline, and be taught how to optimize your own website. There are many courses online, and off, and each has its merits. I can be the first to attest that not all training is the same. I often mention the time many years ago when I spent $70 or so on what was called an SEO Course but turned out to be nothing more than a series of postings from a web forum that this couple had copy and pasted into what was termed as their course. I learned nothing from it, it barely covered the basics. I have heard nothing from those people since then, which is a statement within itself.
One path I would recommend would be the online training as it is, or should be, all laid out for you in easy to follow steps. Offline has advantages, as you would probably be showing up somewhere and have a human instructor, but this has drawbacks as well as the obvious advantages. You need to be somewhere at a particular time. There will be a higher cost involved as the time spent will have a finite income (people work for money!). You will not be testing ideas, theories and instruction as you go, as you will be in a classroom atmosphere with a structured frame time to complete the work. By far it seems that a course designed to be taken at your leisure, and location, is the best approach to learning, whether it be this topic of optimization training, or any other topic of interest where you are learning a skill set that will be applied to, in this case, your website.
Another huge advantage of taking a course is that your instructor will have already spent the time testing and learning what works on the engines and what does not. You will eliminate the trial and error time, and you will eliminate being taken down the path of someone else's ideas, that do not always work well, when you are learning from reading up on forums and blogs across the internet. In a course you should find only good information that is solid, thought out, and tested. This should make the cost of admission well worth the price.
Price though is of main concern. Let's take a look at an average SEO Campaign and what that costs... and remember you are not going to learn from the people who are performing the optimization on your website (although you may be able to see some of their work, you won't be taught what they are doing). I run a low end optimization campaign for many of my clients at $500 monthly. I have had campaigns as high as $2,500 monthly. Perhaps the average I have been involved with over my six years of optimizing sites for other businesses has been around the $900 mark. So, how much will a course be? Well, I have seen them advertised for five digit prices. I have seen two or three day seminars listed from $1,500 and up. I see some inexpensive courses as well. I always wonder exactly what they are going to teach, how effective the information is, and whether it will wind up benefiting me at all.
Technically, selling a course should provide an appreciable income for a good SEO person so that they can sell it for less than they would an actual campaign, because the sale of a campaign is a one time sale, but a course should sell over and over and keep making a profit as time moves forward.
I hope this has laid out some of the reasons why a concise and well laid out course is the best way to learn how to SEO your own website, and allow you to answer some of the questions you probably have about learning SEO for yourself.
