You want your online site to be noticed as the best information out there for what you offer. And, that means you want optimal results when search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. are used to search for your topic. That is what Search Engine Optimization is about.
This can be tricky at first, so it can be helpful to brainstorm with a colleague, or better yet, when you are networking, either online or offline with a small group of your target market, ASK them what keywords and phrases they use to search online for what you're offering.
When you're building your keyword list for Search Engine Optimization (SEO), start with about 10-30 keywords, and think about them in terms of all of your content, not just your target market.
Once you've got your list of keywords ready, you'll want to add them to certain places in your website / blog, on each page, which will optimize if for the search engines.
Search Engine Optimization # 1 - Title Tag:
The title page of your website needs to be different for each page of your site. And the title of for each page should be specific to the content of that page.
This would include your tab names. Say your 'About Page' - put in "About (your name).
This is what the search engine spiders read first, so it's important to put your keywords here. And it will also be the text that displays in the URL part of your address after the forward slash (/).
Search Engine Optimization #2 - Content
Incorporate your keywords into each page of your site. Because people scan while they read online, you need to break up the copy on your page, using white space, headings, bullets, bold print, etc.
Some Ideas of where to put keywords:
Search Engine Optimization #3 - Domain Name
if you can, use keywords in your domain name. It will make it that much more attractive to the search engines.
I look forward to seeing you at the top of the search engine searches!
